Before we answer the question about green burial, let's talk about "green" in our daily lives. For most people "green" means eco-friendly. Many people think of hybrid cars, recycling, compact fluorescent lights and solar power. These are all examples of "green" in our daily lives, but what about "green" as it applies to a funeral?
Green burials have been around for a long time, they just weren't referred to as "green". Green burials are generally handled by two separate entities. The first part of a green burial takes place at the funeral home. Heart of Texas uses refrigeration in lieu of embalming. Most of our service area sits on top of aquifers which supply us with drinking water. When you eliminate embalming fluid, you reduce the amount of chemicals that end up in your drinking water. Heart of Texas also has certified green burial caskets. These caskets are constructed of materials that are eco-friendly so they will bio-degrade.
The second part of a green burial is the cemetery. A certified green burial cemetery does not allow outer burial containers such as concrete grave liners or burial vaults. They also limit the density of burials in the cemetery so there is a smaller impact on the eco-system. While there are no "100% green cemeteries" in our service area at this time, you can still select a cemetery that does not require an outer burial container. It is difficult to go totally "green" at this time, but you do have the choice to go as "green" as possible.
